Our Research Connections series highlights design and make work in the industries Autodesk serves. In this Research Connections talk, Vinayak R. Krishnamurthy, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, shares three short stories to explore design conceptualization as a complex process where perception, action, and cognition converge. The goal is to address the fundamental challenge of facilitating flow between design thinking and communication.

The first story examines spatial user interfaces and interaction techniques inspired by embodied cognition and ecological psychology, exploring how human tool-making abilities can enhance digital design interfaces. The second story introduces partitive geometry, a new nature-inspired generative design paradigm, with applications in architected material design and multi-robot cooperative manufacturing. The third story investigates reflective conversation as an interaction modality for iterative design ideation, considering its implications in the context of knowledge graphs and large language models for cognitive design support.
